For the 1st few months of baby G's life feeding him was pretty much a no brainer. Insert boob in mouth, bam nutrition. I started having my normal anxiety when I knew the ped was going to give us the okay to start feeding him real food. I googled all kinds of crap. Organic food, gluten free food, food with arsenic..awesome. I decided to make my own baby food. Not so much because of the arsenic, but mostly because I convinced my husband that I was saving us an assload of cash that could in turn be used to buy cases of wine..yes, cases. I have no fancy baby food bullet, or any other magical-baby-food-making-device. I use my good old blender and food processor.
I usually buy tons of fruits and veggies and make it all in one shot.
I freeze the batches and they last me 4-5 weeks.
Sweet potatoes
I put them in on 350.
I start poking around after 20 minutes, and leave them in until they are pretty soft.
Cool and mash.
Peas and butternut squash.
Boil forever.
I use a double boiler thingy. Because I am lazy.
Added some organic chicken for a few minutes at the end.
Put in food processor with some cooking liquid, formula, or breast milk.
Bananas and blueberries.
Yes, my blender is pink, and yes momma was drinking some of that wine.
I freeze all of my concoctions in muffin tins.
Is this old news? Because, I felt like a freakin' rocket scientist when I thought to do this.
The silicon trays are the easiest to pop the food out of.
I like the mini muffin tins because I can mix 2 or 3 different cubes together and call it a gourmet meal.
So there you have it. Baby food 101. I am clearly a rookie, and my kid eats the same damn things everyday. So if you have any other tips or recipes I would love to hear from you!
As an added bonus, I have included an idea for how to freeze breast milk.
I did not think of this. I googled it of course.
Get a gift bag, cut a slit in the bottom, pop the bag through.
It freezes flat, the oldest bag is always on the bottom to pull out, and it doesn't take up tons of room
Freakin' genius.
Thanks for reading.

Awesome post! I used to use the ice cube tray trick for freezing the food, but I LOVE the muffin tray idea. Genius! And the bag for the breast milk... yup genius! I'll definitely be using both those ideas this time around. Thanks for this post! =)
ReplyDeleteI wish I knew that stuff when my kids were younger. I always hated the amount of money I was spending on jar food that smelled so disgusting! Have you figured out about how much money you're saving a month by doing this?
ReplyDelete1 6 oz jar of earths best is about 1.20 x's 3 x's 7 days a week is about $25 a week. Plenty of savings for wine and shoes!
DeleteWe just started "real" food the other day. I also just use my blender and food processor. I do need to get some of those silicone trays though, I'm just using ice cube trays right now. I broiled the acorn squash and Quinn seemed to like it. I was SO nervous though. Yesterday she had bananas and loved them. I added some cinnamon and she loved it even more. I think she got her dad's sweet tooth, haha.
ReplyDeleteA gift bag for freezing breast milk?! Heck yeah! Thanks for the great ideas!
ReplyDeleteI did this exact thing with my little guy! One of my favorite websites for great food combos is www.wholesomebabyfood.com. One of Noah's favorites was applesauce with blueberries, then I'd crush some graham cracker or cheerios on top for added texture. He loved it!
ReplyDeleteAnd seriously, the muffin pan?? Genius! I used ice cube trays but was always frantically thawing out more, because my chubby boy would eat those little 1 oz cubes so fast! lol. Great post!!
Great website, thanks! I tried the graham cracker trick today..good stuff :)
