Products I Won't Do Without.....by Jess

A couple of things I love. That I keep around because they're awesome and natural and organic and not-chemicals.

First up. If you have children with hair, you need this. None of my kiddos has ever had head lice, because I'm OBSESSIVE about using this product in their hair.

Specifically the one all the way to the right, the hair detangler. All the products are amazing, but they're a tad pricey, and I'm a cheap ass. BUT. I will always, without fail, have the detangler on hand.

From their site: Zippity Doo’s™ Leave-In Detangler Spray for Children (and Adults, too) is made with a special combination of natural ingredients, including Silk Protein, Geranium Extracts, Wild Cherry Bark, Rosemary, Tea Tree Oil, Lavender, Lemongrass & Sage Extracts designed to detangle, moisturize & eliminate frizz while repelling lice & other insects.

This stuff SMELLS amazing. My oldest has a serious issue with static in her hair, and this helps with that.

PLUS WE'VE NEVER GOTTEN LICE. I'm terrified of lice. Small bugs in general freak me out, and so I'm a complete psycho who taught my children when they were in preschool never to put other people's hats on their heads, or jackets, and who checks for lice and ticks weekly.

UGH. I think I paid around $8 for the detangler from Amazon, and I use it on the three older ones daily, and it lasts me about three months. Seriously awesome stuff.

Next on the list.

Another sort of pricey thing I adore.

You can find this at Target, in the baby section. It's a head to toe ointment made form shea butter and other oils, smells amazing, and has really helped with Livie's face rash. The child has had an awful rash on her cheeks for over a year, that isn't related to any allergies, and I've tried everything to get rid of it. Aquaphor, oils, vaseline, lotions, lanolin, vinegar, etc, etc, etc. NOTHING has made it better.

A week of putting this stuff on twice a day and the rash is a lot better. I use it on my lips and hands too, now, because I like the way it smells. It's an ointment, not a lotion, so one tube does go a long way.

One last thing I love.

I'm sure you've all heard of it because everyone is currently on the bandwagon.

I used it way back when before it got cool. When I had to special order it from Amazon because they didn't carry it in stores.

OILS. Coconut oil, grapeseed oil, and sweet almond oil. I love them.

I haven't used a traditional lotion on my kids in forever. For all of us, I use coconut oil in the winter to moisturize our skin, and grapeseed oil in the summer. It's lighter. Sweet almond oil is amazing on the ends of hair. I rub a tiny bit in the palms of my hands and use it on my hair ends (super curly), and on Liv's hair (super dry).

I love oil.

Any products you love? Something off the beaten bath that you can't live without?

  1. Thanks for sharing! I will definitely look into the 1st products ( I use the other two already). I am also a total freak about lice or anything like that and even though my daughter is only 16 mo. old I still freak out when we go to the Y daycare and such! :)

  3. I love Dr. Bronners for Emily's bath time. We've been using it since she was about 8 months old and I've just now ordered a second bottle (10 months later). I have started using some of it in a tile floor cleaning recipe as well, so I ordered the 1L bottle and it was $20.

I second the oils. Coconut oil is my old stand by for on her bum, and I use sweet almond oil when I'm making lotions.

I've also started spraying some diluted apple cider vinegar on Emily's hair as it gets really tangled in the back come morning as it grows longer. The ACV just helps soften like conditioner. I've also heard that it helps repel lice (as in I knew of people doing it when I was in elementary school), but I don't know if that's accurate or not?

  4. I just started using the head-to-toe wash that goes with that ointment. I use it on both boys and we all love it. Logan's hair is straight and super thick so maybe I should try that detangler on it. It tends to just look a teeny bit crazy all the time.

  5. Just curious if you've used the Fairy Tales brand of lice repellent hair care. I found it at Ulta, and have been using it on my kids since we had a lice scare at daycare. So, if you have, a comparison opinion on that would be very welcome. Because who wants to waste money on shit that won't work? ;)

We love comments. We'd love for you to leave them. You're welcome to be honest, straighforward, even disagree, but outright rudeness will be deleted. Cause we have lots of power that way.
